What Saves the Most Gas?

Simple Ways to Save Gas

  • Set your thermostat between 65 and 70 degrees when you are at home and at 58 degrees when away from the house for more than a few hours. A 5 degree setback at night and when away during the day can save $175 or 71 CCFs-Per Household-Per year.
  • Turn down thermostats automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat.
  • Change or clean furnace filters once a month during the heating season. Use receipt of your natural gas bill as a reminder.
  • Use your registers to direct warm airflow across the floor because warm air rises.
  • Caulk and rope caulk windows. Close storms or install plastic window kits and save $95 or 59 CCFs—Per Household—Per year.
  • Place a sheet of aluminum foil between the radiator and the wall to reflect heat back into the room.
  • Close vents and doors in unused rooms and close dampers on unused fireplaces.
  • Open draperies and blinds to let the sun's warmth in on sunny days. Close them at night to insulate against cold air outside.
  • Ceiling fans can be reversed to draw warm air down to living spaces, can cut heating bills by as much as 10 percent a season.
  • Seal up big holes on the top floor and in the basement.and save $113 or 71 CCFs-Per Household-Per year.
  • Lower your water temperature to warm or normal and wrap your hot water heater and save $48 or 30 CCFs—Per Household—Per year.

Integrated Hot Water Heating System

Integrated hot water heating systems, also known as combination water and space heating systems, use the energy from the space-heating unit in your home to heat water.

Demand Water Heaters

Unlike a standard tank-type water heater, no hot water is maintained in the unit when there is no water flow, and no energy is used to keep a tank of water hot when no hot water use is occurring.

Windows

When heat is lost or gained due to poor insulation, your heating and cooling systems must work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, resulting in higher energy costs. These costs can be lowered with a few improvements to windows.
